  1. “The Sky’s The Limit”… but you start on £2.50 per hour.
    Is that something to celebrate?

    • At this risk of sounding like a callous, Tory capitalist running dog, everyone has to start somewhere. My YTS in 1989 wasn’t ever going to pay shedloads but it did get me on the ladder, albeit at the bottom rung. Prior to 2010, apprenticeships had no minimum pay (I think) until the NMW was extended, albeit at a lower rate.

  2. It is wonderful that so many new apprenticeships have been created. However, this system is still prone to abuse. I have personal experience of a local business that trained an apprentice for 4 months, had them working unsociable hours all over the pre-Christmas and New Year period, and then ended the apprenticeship in the first week of January because they (the business) “Could no longer afford the apprentice”. I am not naming any names because this business knows who they are. Needless to say, the apprentice is devastated.

    • That’s not acceptable, is it? The training company (that negotiates places with employers) should have identified that prior to the place starting; unless it was a direct place with the provider?

  3. Employers have never had it so good.
WE have never had it so bad.
    Cheers Tories.
When I say “Tories” I include the ‘labour’ party in that.
